Saint Paul’s Economic Resilience: A Closer Look at Local Business Successes

Saint Paul, Minnesota, has long been recognized for its diverse economy and vibrant business community. Despite challenges, local businesses continue to demonstrate resilience and innovation, contributing significantly to the city’s economic vitality.

Mo’s Tropical Market: A Family Legacy Thrives

Established in 2019, Mo’s Tropical Market has become a cornerstone for the Twin Cities’ Hmong community. Specializing in tropical fruits and vegetables from Southeast Asia and Latin America, the market quickly outgrew its original space due to high demand. In 2022, owner Mo Chang expanded operations by opening Mo’s Tropical Wholesale in downtown Saint Paul. This 28,000-square-foot facility not only offers retail sales but also features a commercial kitchen and deli, providing hot food, baked goods, smoothies, and ice cream. The expansion has created over 75 jobs across both locations, underscoring the market’s significant impact on the local economy.

LifeStyle Day Center: Rebuilding Community Connections

LifeStyle Day Center, located on University Avenue, offers a dynamic social community for seniors and adults needing special care. Participants benefit from social interactions, exercise opportunities, and assistance with medical appointments and transportation. The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges, leading to a temporary closure and financial strain. However, with support from the Saint Paul Port Authority’s Small Business Loan Program, owner Sheng Amerson revitalized the center, ensuring that participants could once again enjoy essential social interactions and services.

City Initiatives Bolster Business Growth

The City of Saint Paul actively supports local businesses through various initiatives. The Department of Planning and Economic Development (PED) offers resources such as the Business Resource Center, providing assistance with business-related questions and directing owners to available programs. Additionally, the city has established the Downtown Vitality Fund, allocating $5 million to support housing projects and economic development in the downtown area. These efforts aim to attract businesses, beautify the urban core, and invest in infrastructure that supports long-term growth.

Recognizing Excellence: Saint Paul Business Awards

To honor outstanding contributions to the community, the Saint Paul City Council annually recognizes local businesses through the Saint Paul Business Awards. These awards celebrate businesses that exemplify community engagement, provide essential services, invest in their employees, and uphold the city’s values of equity and diversity. Such recognition not only highlights individual successes but also inspires other businesses to strive for excellence.

Saint Paul’s economic landscape is shaped by the dedication and innovation of its local businesses. Through community support, city initiatives, and the resilience of business owners, the city continues to foster a thriving and inclusive economy.
